Resize Image for Instagram

Resize a photo to the right size for Instagram, online and free. Instagram shows feed posts 1080 pixels wide: square 1080 × 1080, portrait 1080 × 1350 and landscape 1080 × 566, while stories and reels use 1080 × 1920. Pick the format, and TypeorDrop crops your photo around the centre to fill it exactly, or pads it with white so nothing is cut off. Uploading at Instagram's own sizes means the app doesn't crop your photo in a way you didn't expect.

FAQ

What is the best image size for Instagram?

For feed posts, 1080 pixels wide: 1080 × 1080 for square, 1080 × 1350 for portrait (4:5) and 1080 × 566 for landscape (1.91:1). Stories and reels are 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Profile photos are shown small and round, so 320 × 320 is enough.

Should I post portrait or square?

Portrait (1080 × 1350) takes up the most space in the feed, which makes it a common choice for photos. Square suits graphics, quotes and grid layouts.

Will Instagram compress my photo again?

Yes, Instagram recompresses every upload. Starting from the exact size it uses avoids an extra resize on its side and keeps the result as sharp as possible.

My photo gets cut off. What can I do?

Choose Pad instead of Crop to fill. The whole photo is kept and white bands fill the rest of the frame.

Can I use a photo smaller than 1080 pixels?

Yes. It is enlarged up to twice its size, which can look a little softer. Past 2× it stops at the limit, so the result is smaller than 1080 px and Instagram scales it up itself.

Which formats work?

JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF images up to 15 MB; only the first frame of an animated GIF is used. The result keeps the original format, with HEIC and AVIF photos saved as JPG, unless you choose JPG, PNG or WebP.

Is it free?

Yes. You can use up to 2 tools a day without an account, and 10 a day with a free account. Pro removes the daily limit (fair use) and ads for $4 per month or $38.40 per year.

Are my images safe?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after about 24 hours, and results after 7 days. We don't share your files with anyone.
