Compress Image

Make an image file smaller, online and free. Pick the size you need, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or any number, and TypeorDrop keeps the best quality that fits under it. Photos for email, websites, online forms and chat apps often have to stay below a limit, and this tool gets them there without you guessing at quality settings. If the image can't reach the size at its full dimensions, its width and height are reduced as well, and the result tells you exactly what changed.

How to use Compress Image

  1. Upload the image: Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or other image onto the page, or tap to browse. Files up to 15 MB are fine.
  2. Pick a size: 200 KB is selected. Tap 50 KB, 100 KB or 500 KB, or type your own size. Keep the original format or switch to JPG or WebP.
  3. Compress and download: Click Compress. You see the old and new file size and dimensions, then download the result.

FAQ

How small can an image get?

Most photos fit under 100 KB easily, and under 50 KB at a smaller width and height. A very large or detailed image may need smaller dimensions to get there; the tool does that automatically and shows the new size, such as 1280 × 853 px.

Will compression reduce the quality?

A smaller file always loses some detail, but the tool keeps as much as the size allows. At 200 KB most photos look the same on screen; at 50 KB fine details and textures get softer.

Why didn't my PNG reach the size?

PNG is a lossless format: great for screenshots and logos, but large for photos. Fewer colours are tried first; if that is still too big, choose JPG or WebP as the output format and compress again.

Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. HEIC and HEIF photos are saved as JPG by default, which every website and app accepts. Photos taken in portrait mode are turned the right way up.

What about transparent images?

PNG and WebP keep transparency. If you choose JPG, transparent areas are filled with white, because JPG can't store transparency, and the result says so.

What is the maximum file size?

You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF images up to 15 MB and 50 megapixels. Animated GIFs are accepted, but only the first frame is kept.

Is it free?

Yes. You can use up to 2 tools a day without an account, and 10 a day with a free account. Pro removes the daily limit (fair use) and ads for $4 per month or $38.40 per year.

Are my images safe?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after about 24 hours, and results after 7 days. We don't share your files with anyone.
