FAQ

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what's inside. PDFs made of scans or photos often shrink by 80 to 95 percent. PDFs that are mostly text are usually small already and shrink much less, because text takes very little space.

Which option should I choose?

Recommended suits most files: images are kept at screen and print quality, so scans stay readable, and PDFs with scans or photos usually end up 70 to 90 percent smaller. Pick a size when a website or form sets a limit. Smallest possible uses the strongest compression we offer, so photos and scanned pages look softer.

Will compression lower the quality?

Images are made smaller first: they are scaled down and saved with stronger JPEG compression, step by step, only as far as needed to reach your size. Text stays sharp because it is not turned into an image. At the smallest sizes, photos and scanned pages look softer.

What is the maximum file size?

You can upload PDFs up to 50 MB and up to 500 pages. Password-protected PDFs that need a password to open can't be compressed; remove the password first.

What happens to forms, signatures and PDF/A?

Compression rewrites the file. Text, images, links and page order are kept, but PDF/A status is not kept, interactive form fields may not survive, and any digital signature becomes invalid because the file has changed. Keep your original if you need any of those.

What if my PDF can't be made smaller?

If a file can't be made smaller, for example because it is already well optimised, you get your original back unchanged instead of a bigger copy. The result then says the PDF is already well compressed.

Is Compress PDF free?

Yes. You can compress up to 2 PDFs a day without an account, and 10 a day with a free account. Pro removes the daily limit (fair use) and ads for $4 per month or $38.40 per year.

Are my files safe?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after about 24 hours, and compressed results after 7 days. We don't share your files with anyone.

Do I need to install anything?

No. TypeorDrop runs in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, so there is nothing to download or install.
