Compress PDF to 1 MB

Compress a PDF to 1 MB or less, online and free. 1 MB is a comfortable size for email attachments: it sends fast, opens quickly on a phone, and fits the attachment limits some workplaces and mail systems set. At 1 MB there is plenty of room, so reports, brochures, presentations saved as PDF and multi-page scans keep their photos sharp. Upload your PDF and see how much smaller it gets.

FAQ

Why compress a PDF to 1 MB for email?

Big attachments are slow to send and open, especially on mobile data, and some mail systems and shared inboxes reject large attachments. A PDF under 1 MB arrives quickly and opens anywhere.

Can a 50 MB PDF really get to 1 MB?

Often, if most of the size comes from scans or photos: a 30-page scan of 40 MB typically fits under 1 MB with readable pages. Very long scans may not, and then you get the smallest version we could make, with its size shown.

Will my photos still look good?

At 1 MB, usually yes. Photos are scaled to a sensible screen and print resolution and saved as good-quality JPEG. Text, lines and vector graphics are not turned into images, so they stay sharp.

Will compression lower the quality?

Images are made smaller first: they are scaled down and saved with stronger JPEG compression, step by step, only as far as needed to reach your size. Text stays sharp because it is not turned into an image. At the smallest sizes, photos and scanned pages look softer.

What is the maximum file size?

You can upload PDFs up to 50 MB and up to 500 pages. Password-protected PDFs that need a password to open can't be compressed; remove the password first.

What happens to forms, signatures and PDF/A?

Compression rewrites the file. Text, images, links and page order are kept, but PDF/A status is not kept, interactive form fields may not survive, and any digital signature becomes invalid because the file has changed. Keep your original if you need any of those.

Is it free?

Yes. You can compress up to 2 PDFs a day without an account, and 10 a day with a free account. Pro removes the daily limit (fair use) and ads for $4 per month or $38.40 per year.

Are my files safe?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after about 24 hours, and compressed results after 7 days. We don't share your files with anyone.
