Compress PDF to 500 KB

Compress a PDF to 500 KB or less, online and free. 500 KB is a common limit for website uploads, support tickets, booking and claim forms, and a size that sends quickly by email even on a slow connection. It leaves enough room to keep scans and photos clear, so most documents look almost the same after compression. Upload your PDF and see the new size before you download.

FAQ

Will my PDF fit in 500 KB?

Documents of up to about ten scanned pages usually fit with good quality. Longer scans may need a lower quality, and very long ones may not reach 500 KB at all; then you get the smallest version we could make and the result screen tells you its size.

My PDF is already under 500 KB. What happens?

Nothing is changed: you get the same file back, so its quality is untouched. Choose Smallest possible if you still want it smaller.

Is 500 KB good for email?

Yes. Most email services accept attachments of 20 to 25 MB, but a 500 KB PDF sends and opens quickly, and it won't fill up anyone's inbox.

Will compression lower the quality?

Images are made smaller first: they are scaled down and saved with stronger JPEG compression, step by step, only as far as needed to reach your size. Text stays sharp because it is not turned into an image. At the smallest sizes, photos and scanned pages look softer.

What is the maximum file size?

You can upload PDFs up to 50 MB and up to 500 pages. Password-protected PDFs that need a password to open can't be compressed; remove the password first.

What happens to forms, signatures and PDF/A?

Compression rewrites the file. Text, images, links and page order are kept, but PDF/A status is not kept, interactive form fields may not survive, and any digital signature becomes invalid because the file has changed. Keep your original if you need any of those.

Is it free?

Yes. You can compress up to 2 PDFs a day without an account, and 10 a day with a free account. Pro removes the daily limit (fair use) and ads for $4 per month or $38.40 per year.

Are my files safe?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after about 24 hours, and compressed results after 7 days. We don't share your files with anyone.
