Application forms for courses, scholarships, jobs and memberships often limit each attachment to 200 KB: a CV, a transcript, a recommendation letter or a scanned certificate. Most documents of a few pages can. A scan of 20 or 30 pages usually can't, because even at the lowest quality each page needs some space. Long text documents can also stay above 200 KB. If 200 KB can't be reached, you get the smallest version we could make, and the result screen tells you its size.
Text and fonts take very little space and can't be compressed much further. A text-only CV is often already under 200 KB. If it isn't, it usually contains a large photo or logo, and that is what gets compressed.
Compress each one first, then combine them with Merge PDF. If the merged file is still too big, compress the merged file again.
Images are made smaller first: they are scaled down and saved with stronger JPEG compression, step by step, only as far as needed to reach your size. Text stays sharp because it is not turned into an image. At the smallest sizes, photos and scanned pages look softer.
You can upload PDFs up to 50 MB and up to 500 pages. Password-protected PDFs that need a password to open can't be compressed; remove the password first.
Compression rewrites the file. Text, images, links and page order are kept, but PDF/A status is not kept, interactive form fields may not survive, and any digital signature becomes invalid because the file has changed. Keep your original if you need any of those.

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after about 24 hours, and compressed results after 7 days. We don't share your files with anyone.
